Encountering Mandara in Shinobi Art of Vengeance delivers an intense dose of nostalgia for series veterans. Originally appearing as the third major antagonist in the classic Shinobi title, this formidable boss returns as the most demanding combat challenge in Art of Vengeance. Nearly all his signature offensive techniques from the original game make appearances here, though often with enhanced mechanics. The storyline reveals that Joe Musashi failed to eliminate Mandara during their previous confrontation, resulting in his captivity and manipulation by Lord Ruse’s military forces deep within the mountainous regions.

Mandara’s Attack Arsenal Breakdown

Mandara employs four distinct offensive patterns that require different counter-strategies:

  • Electric Fence: Mandara electrifies the ground surface, inflicting continuous damage and forcing player respawn if contact occurs. This creates persistent area denial.
  • Return of Bodhisattvas: Mandara summons vertical columns of bodhisattva statues that gradually advance leftward across the battlefield. These formations may appear as single entities or multiple stacked units.
  • Fiery Spit: Mandara projects several small, bouncing fire-imbued boulders that traverse the screen with unpredictable trajectories.
  • True Power: Mandara unleashes a massive energy beam; players must either crouch beneath it or scale the wall structures to avoid damage.

At the combat’s commencement, Mandara typically activates his Electric Fence technique immediately. While this electrical field isn’t permanent, it persists for a substantial duration. The visual indicator is a distinct red screen glow. Following this, he initiates the Bodhisattvas summoning sequence, which introduces the most challenging aspect of this encounter.

Advanced Combat Strategies

During my initial attempt, Mandara predominantly deployed three-statue tall Bodhisattva columns. The successful second encounter featured only single statue summons. The singular statue configuration proves significantly more manageable since it maintains your elevation at facial level. Striking Mandara’s face is essential for inflicting damage; specifically target the Red Jewel for maximum effectiveness.

In the victorious engagement, he abstained from employing the massive Bodhisattva columns and the True Power laser technique. Nevertheless, remaining vigilant for these attacks is crucial. The random number generation governing his attack selection creates substantial variability between attempts. He periodically utilizes Fiery Spit, launching miniature boulders across the arena, which occurred in both of my attempts.

Critical strategy note: Bodhisattvas can be destroyed, including individual statues. This necessitates careful attack timing, as destroying your platform could strand you within the electrified terrain.

When confronting single or double statue formations, I execute dive-kick assaults followed by immediate evasion before subsequent statues materialize. A crimson light column indicates impending statue spawns.

Exercise patience and capitalize on damage opportunities when available. Even securing a single dive-kick strike followed by repositioning constitutes progress. During statue-free intervals, extended aerial combinations become feasible, though remain alert for Fiery Spit projectiles.

Execution and Rewards

Similar to other boss encounters, you can perform an execution maneuver when Mandara’s health diminishes to approximately 1-2%. Exercise restraint when he approaches this threshold if conditions permit. Your successful completion reward is the highly valuable Shuriken Ninpo ability, which provides significant combat advantages in subsequent stages.
